The Museum of Metrology of the Portuguese Institute for Quality
The Museum of Metrology of IPQ is national reference in the dissemination of metrological heritage of historic interest and the history of metrology in Portugal. The mission of the Museum is to promote the collection, preservation, study and dissemination of metrological estate with historic interest.
The Portuguese Institute of Quality has a vast estate asset of weights and measures.
The Museum has notable collections of national standards of various units of measurement used in different historical periods that allow us to classify national metrology on three main periods:
- The Middle Ages, characterized by the diversity of patterns and their values;
- The formation of the Modern State, beginning in king Manuel I's refom: initiation of a uniform system;
- The Decimal Metric System, published and promoted from mid-nineteenth century.
